We are seeing it more and more. You have finally got fast fibre broadband installed in the main house, and the speeds are flying. But ten metres away, in the new garden office, the guest accommodation, or the calving shed, there is absolutely nothing.

The frustration is real. You can see the house from the window, but you can’t get a signal.

The old solution was to dig a trench across the lawn or yard to run a physical cable. It’s messy, it’s expensive, and nobody wants to dig up their driveway just to get Netflix in the Airbnb or a connection for the CCTV.

The good news is that you don’t have to. There is a smarter way to bridge the gap.

Meet the "Virtual Cable"

We use something called Point-to-Point (PtP) technology. While it sounds technical, the concept is actually very simple. Think of it as a virtual cable stretched through the air.

We install two small, discreet units. One goes on your main house (where the internet is) and the other goes on the external building you want to connect. As long as those two units can see each other—what we call a clear Line of Sight—they can beam the internet connection across the gap securely and at high speed.

It works over distances ranging from 50 metres all the way up to a kilometre or more. Once the signal arrives at the other side, we can install a standard WiFi access point or wire in your devices directly.

Where does this work best?

We have installed these systems all over the country, and the uses are endless. Here are the most common ways our clients are using PtP:

1. The Home Office or Garden Room

With more people working remotely, the garden pod has become a staple in Irish homes. WiFi extenders usually struggle to punch through external walls and triple glazing. A PtP link delivers the full speed of your main broadband directly to your desk, so your Zoom calls don’t freeze, and the kids can game without lag in the separate apartment.

2. Farming: Peace of Mind (and Better Sleep)

This is a game-changer during calving and foaling season. By beaming the internet from the farmhouse to the slatted shed, you can install networked CCTV cameras.

Monitor livestock 24/7: Check the cows on your phone from the warmth of the kitchen (or your bed) rather than trekking out in the rain at 3am.

Security: Extend your network to fuel depots or machinery sheds to keep an eye on valuable equipment.

3. Schools and Businesses

We often help schools share connectivity to sensory gardens or prefabs without expensive groundworks. For businesses, it is a perfect way to link a main office to a warehouse or a trade counter across the yard.

Why not just use a booster?

Standard "boosters" or mesh systems are designed for inside a single building. As soon as you try to push a signal through thick insulation, block work, or across an open yard, the signal drops. PtP is different because it is a dedicated link designed specifically for outdoor transmission.

The Ciz ICT Approach

We don't do messy setups. We mount the units neatly, run the cables professionally, and ensure the connection is encrypted and secure. It is a "set and forget" solution.

If you are tired of weak signals in your outbuildings, or you want to get set up for the busy farming season ahead, give us a shout.
